New Jersey criminal code defines harassment as:
- Anonymous communications at inconvenient hours or in coarse language
- Kicking, shoving, or other offensive contact, or threats to do so
- Any other behavior with the purpose to cause alarm for the victim
Harassment is usually charged as a petty disorderly persons offense, which can result in 30 days in jail and fines up to $500. However, in the case that the defendant is on probation or parole, harassment becomes a fourth-degree felony, punishable by 18 months in jail.
